One Police Officer’s Message For Raising Children With Faith & Open-Mindedness In A Polarized World

After a successful career as an entreprenuer, Bob Cutler (pictured on the left) did what most 62-year-olds do: retired to the police academy! Now he’s written a children’s book.

Doesn’t it feel like our world is more polarized and vulnerable than ever?

For all the messages of love and tolerance being preached in mainstream culture, we strangely seem to be less tolerant of people with differing ideas, backgrounds, and faiths.

Raising children in this environment is a particular challenge. With all the conflicting and confusing messages that our children are exposed to these days, it’s more important than ever to give them a solid foundation of faith with which they can navigate the world.

God Is The Bond That Brings Us Together

Love for our fellow man arises from understanding our common connection with God. He is the common thread that links everything together. Compared to the vastness of his love, our conflicts and petty grievances begin to feel small.

God wants us to be kind and compassionate in the face of our differences. God wants us to love and learn about the world through sharing and understanding those differences.

Teaching Our Children

“It is easier to build strong children than to repair broken men” -Frederick Douglas

Faith is a lifetime journey of acceptance and love. Not only for ourselves, but for those around us. Each person’s faith journey is as unique and individual as they are.

How do we as parents and grandparents nurture that relationship?

We bring them into our community of worship. We answer their questions. We read and discuss scripture. We remind them often that God loves them.

We remind them that God loves every one, their brother and sister, their friends, the kid at school they don’t like, the kid who speaks differently or looks differently.

Every one of God’s children deserves to be treated with kindness. That’s the message of unity that can heal our vulnerable world.

This sweet and uplifting book captures the core of what I teach my young students — we each have God within us, and that makes each of us special and at the same time, it connects us all to one another. What a wonderful message to encourage children to feel the divine light within themselves and shine it brightly in the world!

It beautifully articulates the complexities of self discovery for tiny readers, while reminding us that we are never truly alone. 🙏🏻 Whoever or whatever you believe in - to be able to believe in anything (especially during these trying times in our world) is such a gift.
